I was reading another post and the guy had replaced the battery. However, there are some occasions when a damaged starter relay will cause the starter to make a clicking sound when you turn the key. As mentioned in another posting, I also had a replacement ignition switch fail internally. The sound I hear is the same as if I turned my key to start the 100 after the engine was already running. So I don't know if it is fuel pump or what. Hopefully that will fix my starter issue though! Starter stays engaged with key official. Took a long time and a major pain in the butt, however my problem is gone. Posted: 03-October-2012 at 1:58AM. Points: 1022. x2 on the soloniod, had that same issue with the wife's Explorer. The starter was on its way out and was drawing way too much current which would get the solenoid hot enough to essentially weld the contactor.. we'd have to pull the battery cable each time to get it to stop.. new starter (and solenoid) solved the issue.
