But that idea of the mystical body of Christ is also present here in the pastoral epistles, where Paul says, "I formerly blasphemed and persecuted and insulted him; but I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief. " And so the religious leaders of the day are concerned about that, the scandal that he's giving. It refers to people who were violating the Law of Moses, who were violating the Torah, and they were doing it in a public way and in a grave way. One important fact that runs through all the readings of this Sunday is the readiness of God to welcome and receive us irrespective of how much we have fallen and gone away from him. We are all born into a state of sin under the power of original sin and we all are inclined to commit sin. So it looks like Jesus is being lax about the law. If the father had been mean or tough or bad in any way, probably this son would not have thought of returning. 1 Cor 10:16: The chalice of blessing that we bless is a communion in the Blood of Christ; and the bread that we break is a sharing in the Body of the Lord.
