While the witches' magic is a little underdeveloped, it also does leave room for a bit of growth as most of the spell casting we've seen Emilia perform is summoning. With an intriguing magic system, all witches bear their gifts (or curses depending on who you ask! ) Strictly adult, not just because of the explicit scenes, but also hard themes and actions, while also highly controversial, the Captive Prince is definitely not for everyone. The war between witches and Church is an ancient one, and Lou's most dangerous enemies bring a fate worse than fire. To me what mattered was that he changed when he was shown that he was wrong. Unfortunately, I wasn't entirely sure what the limits on magic were… Anyway, that didn't bother me an awful lot in the bigger picture, so Serpent & Dove gets a solid 5 stars from me!
