The characters are well drawn, there is plenty of action in this first book in the series, while at the same time there is ample indication about a fascinating back story that can be more fully explored in future stories. Both change a lot as the story develops, and their friendship changes with them. At the same time, they have unique aspects: The various Archon mages that Tala befriends are a sometimes cranky & mischievous bunch, but are ultimately helpful once Tala's intense & perhaps borderline Aspie way of relating to them wins them over. At the beginning we get the impression that she's super smart like 'Good Will Hunting' style, but that's quickly proven to be a false impression.
Hoping for more romance in the next book, like actual dates and stuff, things happening beyond the trials. Enjoyed the story and the interaction among the group. There are a lot of cool slice of life mini arcs surrounding her advances. From that point on we slowly begin learning about the lore of the world, but never in an exposition dump, but from conversations, advices given, casual mentions we get snippets of what kind of world the MC is in. So, I felt this started off really well.. then the whol mage trail thing came in to play and everything just felt really vague. A crazy monster hunting adventure & tough caravan protection battle let readers have a good look at how far she's progressed. Its a really well written story with new chapters arriving regualrly. Cleaning up after these entitled kids for 6 years, finding out she can solve equations left on blackboards and using that as her favorite pastime whenever she can. I'm also confused about a lot of things right now, but I'm almost positive that's the authors intent. The second point that I didn't like much in this story, is that he plot doesn't seems to go anywhere. She is introduced to some very attractive men who all appeal to her.
