David Cronenberg, the director of such films as Dead Ringers and The Fly, has a reputation for being a little "out there. " Clearly mobsters of some sort, Tom denies all knowledge of them or Joey, but clearly something is amiss. The verbal exchanges during these scenes seem too pat to be sincere. The movie wants Jack to have a violent conflict but the situation he finds himself in is just too fabricated to be taken seriously. They loved their father dearly, then they turned on him (on a dime)? Yet again they don't really make sure of them. Bello looks a bit shell-shocked at first but quickly realises what he`s trying to do and thankfully remains in character herself, quoting the next scripted line. The beginning is slow, the middle is truly David Cronenberg's ''A History of Violence'' starts off slowly, then changes into a brilliant sprinting marathon, but tumbles before the finish line.

What we are left with is a family who has to pick up the pieces and try to deal with the horrible truth revealed to them. As is evident with 2005's 'A History of Violence', which is as long away from horror as one can get. Once again, it comes back to a question of identity. However, that shouldn't diminish the fact that the majority of the film was very solid. But violence, regardless of the motive, is violence nonetheless. Edie is sobbing into Tom's shoulder, but almost as soon as the door shuts, she pushes away from him and rushes to the hall stairs, Howard Shore's soundtrack quietly revving up again.
